I had it done a year or so ago.

I have Giant Cell Arteritis (GCA - sometimes called Temporal Arteritis) which can lead to permanent blindness or stroke. Along with the GCA, I also have Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR) which is associated with GCA.

And recent studies have shown that Shingles is also linked to GCA!

Treatment for GCA and PMR is with corticosteroids and there are some horrendous side effects from those. I have them. Bad. It's tough. :grumpy: :yell:

So yeah, getting a shingles shot for those who are appropriate candidates would be an excellent idea. Might stave off something more serious. Ya know? :)

Yes, got it a year or so ago too. My dad had shingles, not fun at all, so I didn't hesitate to get the shot.

Timely post. I got shingles around my left mid section exactly 2 weeks ago and I am still in pain. I got a rash on a Friday and blisters started Saturday morning. I went to the urgent care within the hour and was prescribed Valacyclovir and pain medicine. Didn't go to work until the following Friday of that first week.

I am 58 and they normally don't give the vaccine to anyone below 60. Wish I had gotten one!

I would strongly recommend getting the shot. My shingles were not as painful as I expected them to be BUT it caused NERVE damage. I had severe pain in my butt and leg that is finally getting better after 7 years. I only had a few blisters around my side and lower back but doctor said my shingles were mostly internal and caused damage to the nerves in my spine. I could not walk or sit long without pain medicine. Damn the shingles.....get that shot! if on medicare it is free anyway.

Did a short bike ride today..only 35 miles. Was surprised it wasn't worse considering the rash started almost exactly 2 weeks ago. I have a feeling the stingy pain on my right side is going to last awhile though.

Definitely get the vaccination. Wish I did.

I asked my Dr about getting the shingles shot once all this clears up. He said get it in 10 years. If you get shingles, you have natural immunity from it for at least 10 years.

Rash will clear up.Just hope it doesn't lead to this......much worse than shingles. "In some unlucky folks, shingles pain doesn't end when the rash goes away. It goes on. And on. This is called postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), a form of neuropathic pain that can last for months or years, even after the virus is no longer active."
Mine lasted 7 years, pain is almost gone but leg is now numb.

One of the few things in my life that I have no risk signs for, never had chicken pocks, and none of the other stuff that can cause them, which I am glad, Dad got them a couple of years before he passed a way and he was in terrible shape.

My suggestion if you haven't already done so....get the vaccination for chicken pox. It's horrible if you get them as an adult.

I have asked my Dr. about it and he stated the risk of introducing the anti bodies into my system now with a vaccination is far more than my chances of actually contracting pocks from exposure, that is one of the few illnesses that don't seem to show up around here very often and he told me with my habits of not being around a lot of other people most of the time, he didn't think it was worth risk. I would be more afraid of getting whooping cough at my age than chicken pocks.
