Does anyone know how one would go about getting the special tool used for shimming in a new pinon gear? Or, better yet, the dimensions of one ;).
Thanks,
John

you can buy the special shimming tool kit thru any dealer, but it is very very expensive, especially if you only need it once.

Your best bet is to take the bearing housing, bearing, shaft, pinion, and nut, to a QUALIFIED mech and have him do it. It should be done in less than 1/2hr.

Thanks for info. I'll check it out, but you are probably right, might be prudent to have it done, if I can find the right person. I am somewhat reluctant, after having some real bad experiences with "certified" and "qualified" marine mechanics. I may buy it then sell it on e-bay or something. Thanks alot.
john

Re: Shimming Evinrude '82 70hp pinon gear

i had to put a new thrust bearing on my 70 horse and and take my shaft to a lathe and turn it down and i put it back together by feel to where i had just a very little slack and it is still running and that was 6 years ago i dont think there would be enough difference in the gears to worry about it i dont like marine mech or the ones i have delt with very well either they was going to charge me 300 to check mine i could get a rebiult unit for that lol

Thanks for the input. I don't have a lathe (yet!) or ability to do any machining myself, so I'll be looking for a way to do it by shimming. Glad yours has worked so well for you!
john

Re: Shimming Evinrude '82 70hp pinon gear

I THINK the dimention for a 70hp is the same for a 90hp. (not 100% sure)

7.511 US You need .020 US between bar and bearing housing.

If you wait a day or so, I'll let you know for sure. I'm in the middle of changing a driveshaft on a 1980 70hp, and will need the dimention as well....

Maybe someone else knows for sure???
