Re: shiming upper drive unit advice needed
No. If you are installing new bearings in the drive shaft housing, you must re-shim the whole thing. There are 4 sets of bearings in your upper. the two back to back on the yoke, the one in the upper cap and the one in the lower ouput area. If the Yoke bearings were rusty, then how do your gears look? and the rest of the bearings for that matter? If the gears have any pitting at all, or a shot peened look, you should rebuild the upper with all new bearings, gears, and a new yoke.

The yoke is important, because that's probably how the water got in there to begin with, and the seal surface on the yoke is probably all rusted and will chew up a new seal in no time. Also you need to find out how the water got in the bellows. Did the boat land sink? Is there a hole in the main bellows? Is the shift shaft seal in the bell housing shot? Did the shift cable fill up with rust and become stiff? Is the bell housing cracked? If the bellows had water in them, are the U-joints ok? Is the gimball bearing rough?

And if the water came in from the drive shaft seal area, then the gears will have to be replaced anyhow, because the seal surface on the output side of the DSH is a nipple that is actually part of the driven gear, and if the surface pitted and rusted it will never seal properly.

There are a few things that should be checked out..
