I have a 1985 dt85 that I jsut purchased and first time to the lake with it, I start it and it starts going forward while in nuetral. I click it into reverse and I am hearing grinding noises, so other than cause any damage I manually push off of trailer and drive forward however even though the boat flies, nicely, I have to push forward lever about a foot past its normal stop position in order to meet full acceleration. Some kind of linkage or posible cable problem???people I bought it from said everything was always fine with it.

Re: shifting problems

has the gearcase been off recently, hows your cable adjustments, try disconnecting the cable and manually shifting and see if it shifts properly, this will give you an idea if its cable/box related, or in the gearcase, if the gearcase was off recently, did the shift rod position become moved and when put back on, now the adjustments are all screwy,

post as much info al possible and well do our best to help but id start with the cables first to find the source

Re: shifting problems

The one problem with those motors seem to be the gearbox. If the gearshift cable is correctly adjusted the the next step is to pull the sparkplug leads and put in reverse gear. Try and turn the prop while holding the flywheel. If you have a point of resistance followed by a free turn for about 50 degrees then another point of resistance andso on the clutch dog is skipping over the gear dog. Then you have to open the gearbox by pulling the bearing housing out.. you really need a manual then.

Unless you are notmoving the gearlever puposefully fully in to gear if you slowly pull the gear lever back it will grind. In clear deep water give that a try!

regards
sirlespat
