Hello to all, hope to find a cure for this shifting problem. I have a 1986 3.0 mercruser and outdrive. When i put it in forward gear and need to go into rev, wont go, turn off the engine and it will shift into rev. Same for rev to forward,
have to shut the engine down first then it shifts.Would this be a
cable adjustment problem? Any help would be helpful. thank you

Re: shifting problem

I would replace the lower shift cable, they really don't go out of adjustment, they just get old. ;) Welcome to iboats :) .....JK

i would place lower cable as well.. you might be able to adjust and think you have it fixed only to find it fail on you again next time out..

not a hard job to do yourself..

Re: shifting problem

Also sounds like you need to check the shift interupt switch. It may not be working correctly and not allowing the shifting to occur.

Re: shifting problem

Fishermark, I totally agree with that. Usually when the cable goes bad the interrupter sticks and kills the engine, and he's just having trouble getting out of gear. So, Redmans test your interrupt swich to see if it is working before you replace the cable.... It may be as simple as a loose/corroded connection on the switch.....JK
