Shifting problem with a Tohatsu M8B 8hp Long Shaft

Hello,

I am trying to help a friend with his motor from his Hunter 26 sailboat. I take care of all of his boat motors and other mechanical needs, but I am not a boat motor mechanic by trade.

His Tohatsu had some water in the lower unit and I found that the prop shaft seal was bad. I noticed before taking the prop housing out of the lower unit that it seemed stuck in gear. If I moved the shift lever, I was not able to get a neutral position or a different slip direction from the prop.

I took the lower unit off the main housing, disconnected the shift rod and then removed the prop housing and shaft. Everything looked okay inside, Didn't look like the water had been inside there long. I cleaned it all up and everything seemed okay. I checked shift rod and clutch cam and they looked okay. The clutch itself is nice and free and no wear present on the clutch push rod.

I re-assembled the lower unit and put it back on the motor. I re-attached the shift linkage, which is only a pin through the coupler. I filled the lower unit up with marine oil.

No leaks present, but it still is not shifting correctly. Stays in one gear only. no matter the position of the handle. I have triple checked everything I had apart, made sure the clutch cam is behind the clutch push rod. I'm not sure what's going on.

In the parts schematics, it shows a part called the clutch spring holder. I'm guessing this is behind the retainer pin on the spring side and not on the clutch push rod side? It seems like the clutch push rod is too short. I added a small ball bearing behind the push rod, just for testing purposes, and I was able to get a true neutral position, but the shift lever is in reverse.

So, I am asking for help from people wiser than myself. I do not see any linkage adjustment, so either I lost something while taking the prop housing and shaft apart, or there was damage already present. Either way, I need some assistance.

Thanks in advance for your help. Tohastu 8hp M8B / 3B2 Long Shaft . I think it's a 2003 model.

Paul;

Thank you very much! The schematic above is the same one I have been referencing. When I disassembled the prop shaft housing and cleaned things up, I found some very small pieces of something, but could not find any place that looked damaged. Plus, with the water in the gear oil, it was pretty clumpy anyway. Also, by the schematic, it definitely looked to me that I was missing #17, but by the part description, I thought it was on the spring side of the pin holding the clutch cam in place. I'm very careful taking things apart that I've never worked on before and knew I hadn't dropped anything. I had a clean bench with a nice clean towel on it, so I could see any escaping parts.

I'll get #17 ordered up and get this motor back to my friend. It will be nice to give it back to him knowing he wont' have to wiggle the shifting lever all over the place anymore.

I believe mast up day is April 19th or 20th, so he'll be very happy.

Thanks again and I'll give an update when I get everything back together.
