My son inherited his grandfather's 16ft jon boat and a guy at the marina sold me a 1987 Nissan 15hp outboard for $300. The engine runs great but we are having some shifting problems. We are not able to shift into reverse and the engine shifts out of forward and into neutral when cruising at low speeds.

I removed the foot, changed the gear case oil, applied some lube and was able to shift the foot into reverse by applying some muscle but we are not able to shift into reverse with the engine assembled using the shift lever.

Shrimping season starts in a few days and we really need reverse. I have not been able to find a manual for the engine online. Does anyone have any suggestions that can help get my boy's boat up and running? We are fairly handy but have never taken a motors foot apart before. There's always a first time! Maybe we could jury-rig something?

You need to get it into a dealer....Any brand of dealer can examine it for you.

I hope you have better luck with dealers than I have!
