Shifting in forward and to neutral works fine; shifting into reverse is good but going from reverse to neutral stalls the motor. Any suggestions on where to start?

Find the procedure for adjusting the throttle and shift cables there posted on line google it. Make sure your on the proceedure for your exact model and there is an early and late alpha 1 and there measurements are different its really basic takes about 45 minutes your first time around half water to you
your outdrive so you can run it. I fine tune mine on the water so I can run it make sure its at operating temp and tinker with it until I get the best engagement

the shift cable operates a momentary kill switch when it is being shifted in and out of gear to help slow the RPMS down for an easier and smoother shift. Make sure your low idle is right theres a spec I keep mine around 650 to 700 RPMS some may need a little more if there not in really good condition

and while your tinkering adjust your trim sensors as well I think that is where youll find the early and late come to light.

I have adjusted this multiple times and to no avail reverse always stalls the motor.

Since the drive has to be removed to replace the shift cable check for a build up of corrosion in the rear pocket of the bell housing where the shift slider travels for reverse. Sometimes the build up prevents the slider from full movement which will trigger the interrupter switch.
At the same time also be sure the pocket in the upper gear housing where the slider travels for forward should also be cleaned out.
If that is what the problem was then go to the shift cable video that a Chris has on this site After the drive is reinstalled.
