I have 1996 115hp Yamaha Saltwater Series outboard. The problem started when i was backing up slowly and then put the engine in forward rather quickly to keep from hitting some rocks. There was a ting sound. Now the boat will not go in reverse and will only go a couple mph in forward. Also when the boat is cranked in neutral posistion the prop is turning forward.<br /><br />Any suggestions on what might be wrong and how to fix it would be greatly aprreciated.<br /><br />Thanks

snomann,When you say won't go into reverse,Is the shift lever going into reverse and just not shifting or is lever binding?I'm hoping you just have shift cable problems.Remove the shift linkage pin in engine compartment and see if you can manually shift motor from nuetral to forward and reverse.

Thanks for the reply ob. The prop stays turning forward when i shift down to reverse. It never seems to go into neutral. I will try the cable suggestion.

The forward throttle feels tight when I push it forward. With the engine turned off I tried spinning the prop with the throttle pushed forward. Its very difficult to spin the prop. When throttle is in reverse is spins backwards ok.

snomann, Trying to determine whether your problem lies in the exposed shift linkage or in lower unit to shift fork.If you can remove linkage pin from shift lever and run on hose and attempt to shift manually with shift lever in engine compartment it will isolate problem.BE CAREFULL around prop while performing .

Thanks for all the help. The problem is fixed. A clip that holds down the shift cables had come loose not allowing proper shifting.'<br /><br />Thanks again.

I guess there's no need to tell you not to do that again.
