Hey guys wanted to ask you another question. I have a 1990 Johnson 140 VRO. I am using a 1973 Evinrude shift piolt. Last spring I developed shifting problems, (Enigne not going in to neutral, foreward or reverse.) Easy fix found the 73 shifting cable needed to be replaced. Now after de winterization I tried to fire it up with the new cable. No luck. Here is the problem When I shift the cable, it is going into gear, the prop locks, then I put it back in netural to try and start. I checked to see if it was still in gear the prop is now spinning freely, but no turn over, I have to wiggle by throttle control in the netural positon to get into start to trun over, but then no fire. I can't figrue it out?? If the prop is spinning the engine should be in netural right?? Any ideas, do I need to adjust the cable more?? Is it the box, please help??

Sounds like a Neutral Start switch problem.

It's in the control box. Should Look like a small switch with a "Nub" sticking up that is spring loaded. When the throttle is in neutral, that nub pushes in to break(Open up) the start circuit. You may want to try adjusting the shift cable at the motor using the trunnion nut. If it's off a little bit, you will experience this problem.

You're using a 1973 control box for a 1990 engine?? And you want to know why you're having problems? Long-life cables or snap-in cables?...... Make the connections at the box with the cables un-installed at the engine, then make all adjustments at the engine!! See my first two sentances!!!

Afishin'....I'm a little confused on your post. You installed new control cables and now you have to jiggle the throttle to get the engine to turn over. When you get the engine to turn over, it won't start. Is that about it?

Edit: Does your control box have the key switch in it? Can't seem to locate the "Pilot Control" box in my parts look up for 73'.

Thanks.

OBJ that is correct, when I installed the new cables, if i have the throttle in netural position and turn the key, the start won't even trun but then if I wiggle the throttle a little in the netural postion, ti will skip and half turn over and then if I find just the right spot, the starter will turn. But won't start. ( I cheked to see if the prop was in gear and its not it is spinning freely so the cable is shifting into gear correctly. SO to summ it up when I move the sifter to the netiral positon I have to wiggle the controler to get the starter to start turning over the enigne. But it is not consistent.

Yes it has a key to trun but no emergency cut off. It is a side mount control. It is the old stly controls with the hex bolt you screw in. Not clips.

But, it did work before he re-did the cable, right? So apparently , it will, and has worked in the past. It's a matter of what went wrong during or after the installation of the cable. Is the cable misadjusted? Is the kill circuit grounded out in the box or down the line?( I know, you say it has no kill switch, but that doesn't mean there is no kill wire at the box and certainly at the motor. If you have no kill switch in the box, I would be looking at the key switch itself as the culprit or something shorting out when you move the control lever, as you did have it apart when you installed the cable. I would backtrack to the control box and find out what the problem is. Disconnect the Black/Yellow wire from the terminal block on the motor and see if it starts when you get it to crank. But it still sounds like the Neutral safety switch that is causing the no crank situation. Adjust the cable at the motor and see if you can get it to the point where in neutral, at least it will crank the motor over.
