I have a 1963 10hp Johnson and I am replacing the seals. I have no idea how to replace the shifter rod o-ring in that darn thing. Can someone tell me how?

Thanks

Re: Shifter rod O-Ring

On advice from others on this board, I went to the hardware store bought a 7/16 spade drill bit. The end of the bit that fits into the drill the hex part will fit through the bushing that holds the shift shaft o ring. The drill bit shaft just past the hex is a little bigger OD. Just enough to allow you to knock out the bushing. Use a 1/4 in socket extension over the spade part of the bit and use a hammer to knock the bushing out. Do not use a 3/8 extension as it is too big around and will damage the lower unit housing. Don't ask me how I know. I used this method on the 64 9.5hp and 55 10hp I put seal kits in. I don't know what size motor you are working with.

I see a 63 10hp. Should work fine.

I used a 12" or so piece of 5/16" steel rod (took it off my kids old crib) and ground one end down to a roughly 1/4" cone... The tap it out from the inside... works great.
