I recently posted about my motor staying in fwd and having a problem going into rev. I got my manual today from iboats and went through it. the only thing I can find is on page 7-5 this manual covers every motor 1984-96 2-250hp so I am sure there are alot of these floating around. but it says "2. if the shift handle is hard to move the trouble may be in the lower unit shift rod requiring an adjustment or in the shift box." there are 3 steps at the bottom of the page that shows the remote then a wrench on the shift rod then step three the remote control cable with a linkage and an adj. is there any specs or does this procedure sound logical? I hand turn the prop while my fishing bud puts in in rev I adj. the linkage one way or another till it engages smoothly as possible out of water. then check fwd to ensure it disengages? to some of you thsi may seem like standard practice this guy must be an idiot. but I have replaced stripped out gears in a lower unit and I am well aware of the cost. I dont want to mess this up. I just need a yes you are correct or no you do it this way. I have never worked on a yamaha but by the looks of the cutout pics of the lower unit it's basicly the same. thanks for reading all of this.

Re: shifter rod adjustment pro v 150

Let me try to help you here. Remove the motor hood, and on the starboard (right side facing towards the bow of boat) side there is your control arm and shift cable for adjustment.

Now go to your remote control box up by the steering wheel, and put the remote control lever in "neutral". You should hear it click (top dead center). Go back to the engine. There is this control cable with a "black" plastic end that has a bolt and nut at the outer end that slides in a metal housing, and attached to this plastic end, is the shift lever arm that goes to the lower unit.
Remove this nut that holds the remote control cable, and pull the plastic end up and slightly away. With your fingers, move the shift lever back and forth. It should move freely if it's working "smoothly".. correctly. There is a "stamped" arrow on the lower motor cowling that points towards the shift lever that goes down into the lower unit. Line up the shift lever with the "arrow", and turn the prop. If the prop turns without any restrictions or clicking sounds, it's in neutral..
Now make some effort to "mark" the location on the side of the metal housing where the bolt and rubber bushing is located. This is where the "center of bolt" should be for your remote control cable to be attached. You will no doubt have to lengthening the black plastic end to fit on the bolt from the shift lever arm.
When you have put the metal washer and nut on and tighten it good, you can go back to the remote control box and put the control lever in reverse. You should "not" be able to turn the prop. Do the same for "forward", and you shouldn't be able to turn the prop.

If you cannot get the shift lever to move when all this is done, you have have a trouble spot in the "remote control box."

Report back here if all goes well.
