--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have a 1998 force 120 I just change the water pump on... The shifter was in neutral when the lower unit was dropped. Put the impeller on and due to a lack of my knowledge, I turne the shifting rod in prior to putting the lower unit back on. Now when I start the engine, the prop spins because it is in gear even though the shifter is in neutral. I took the lower unit back off and no matter what position I turn the shifting rod to, the prop stays engaged to the prop. How can I know it is neutral before I put it back on?

Re: shifter linkage problem

You have the splined shiftshaft on that motor, so...
Put the shiftshaft into forward, put throttle/shifter in forward, re-assemble.
This should re-index the shiftrod so you can get all 3 gears.

Re: shifter linkage problem

You will have to turn the shiftshaft and then check to see if it is in forward by turning the propeller clockwise (when looking from the rear).

The driveshaft should turn clockwise (when looking from the top).

If you hold the driveshaft so that it can't turn, then turn the prop clockwise, the propeller should ratchet on the gears when in forward.

Re: shifter linkage problem

ratchet -- It should still turn and you should hear a little clicking like when you turn a socket wrench.

When turning the prop clockwise:

If in neutral-the driveshaft should not turn.

If in reverse - the driveshaft will turn counter-clockwise.
