shifter in forward kicks back to neutral

I have a 1975 Evinrude 6 hp model 6504 that when put into forward will stay there only at low speeds. When reved it kicks back to neutral. If the shifter is held in forward it runs fine. It also runs well in reverse when reved. I've been told there is an adjustment screw somewhere that can balance the forward and reverse play. I can't find anything around the shifter handle that looks like it could be it. Where will I find this?

Sounds more like your clutch dog is worn, which is a bit more expensive. The dog has precisely machined edges that mate with the forward and reverse gears. When these edges wear and round, they will be forced apart when the revolutions increase. This is usually due to improper adjustment or worn shift linkages, but usually due to improper slow shifting by the operator. Be sure to make a sure, quick movement when shifting. You will need to drop the lower unit to verify this.

It's not really an adjustment screw as it is two bolts and a connector that joins the two sections of Shift Rod together. To inspect this connector, you'll have to drop the lower unit to see the connector.

My first thought was the clutch dog as well. But was told that since it stays in gear if the shifter if held forward that the dog may not be the problem. He wanted me to try the shaft connector (in his words the adjustment screw).

As for the shaft connector I was really hoping the it wasn't what I remembered the last time I dropped the lower unit (about 8 years ago). But it sounds like it will be a learning experience again (hopefully not because I make a mistake.)

Stop with the wishful thinking, already. It's the clutch dog and forward gear. OR the lower unit has been run full of water instead of oil. Yes, either of those means $$expensive repair, but do you want to fix it or not fix it?

There is no "adjustment". If the shift rod connector were not connected, you wouldn't have any shift at all. If you continue to try to hold it in gear, you will eventually break the inner shift lever under the powerhead, meaning more $$expensive repair.

...and if it has been 8 years, I would pull that water pump and impeller while you have the lu down, it is time.
