Hi all. I have a 1987 Sea Ray 17.5 bowrider with the 3 L, 4 cyl mercruiser and Alpha drive. The Control box (the forward/nutral/reverse) has a lot of slop in the handle itself. It shifts properly, but feels like the handle is about to fall off. I tightened the allen bolt/nut on the underside, and this had little to no corrective effect. Is there a way to fix this? Any advice or instructions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: shifter handle is loose.

Depending on the model of control box, you need to remove the control box from its mounting and tighten the screw at the back, or remove the button from the centre of the control handle and tighten the lock nut in there.

Post a picture of the control box and we can tell you the exact procedure.

Re: shifter handle is loose.

In addition to the above...most controls have a nylon (or plastic) bushing, between the shaft and the housing. Many of these bushings can be replaced by simply removing the handle, and slipping a new one in place. He may be missing his bushing, altogether....

All of this speculation depends on the model that he has...he needs to give us a picture!
