Shifter box high pitched whistle

Hello,
I have a mid 90s Smokercraft 142 Pro-Mag with an Evinrude 28 HP outboard (Remote OMC shift with a steering wheel). The shift box makes a chirp when I turn the ignition key (just as it has every time I've used it since I purchased it 3 years ago); however, now once the motor starts the shift box emits a high pitched whistle that will not stop unless I kill the motor. It seems to get louder (???) when it is under full acceleration.

My question: is there a known cause or fix for this complaint? Where would I best start troubleshooting. Is there a danger to run the motor with this condition? Any help will be deeply appreciated.

It can depend the exact year, they made some chnages to the system the 90's. The alarm is most likely indicating an overheating situation, which can destroy your motor quickly if you run it like that. It can also be a defective sensor or shorted wire, so before you start the motor again you need to find out what's going on.

I believe you have a short or defective buzzer as the 28hp isn't oil injected so there is no oil tank. There also should not be an overheat alarm when it is cold and just started.

It's also possible the overheat sender wire has been disconnected on the cylinder head and is just hanging loosely, maybe contacting the block, thus completing the circuit. It'll be a tan wire coming out of the head.

Gentle Seaman,

Thank you for the several positive responses. I disassembled the (well built, strongly constructed) OMC control box and found the Warning buzzer module fried, I also examined the engine/cylinder head tan wire for disconnection or shorting and found that not to be the case. I ordered a new Warning Horn replacement kit on eBay (gulp) for $75.00. My OEM buzzer had 4 sound holes; the replacement has 1. I'm assuming this is merely an updated design?????

I'm hoping that this addresses the complaint??? If Not, I will let the site know what works and what diidn't.

I deeply appreciate the expertise and experience that those who replied have shared.
