Shifted Engine When Not Running. Any Harm?

I have a 1994 25hp Johnson. I lubed the shift linkages the other day and then proceeded to shift it into forward and reverse a few times with the engine not running. Afterwards, I happened to read the manual, and in a "Note", it said to not shift the engine with the engine not running. ("Note" in the manual is defined as "Information that will help prevent damage to machinery")

Did I harm anything? Thanks.

I would not worry about it. I'm sure you did not force it.

no as long as you were not forcing into gear.

Did not force it, and did not hear any strange sound. Anyway, I won't be doing it again. Thanks for your replies.
