Shiftcable question A1G2

I pulled the lower unit to change the impeller and when I went back to install the lower I noticed an old backing plate from the flappers laying on the ground. So I pulled the top half and risers to check for more pieces which I found none but changed the flappers anyway. I put the two halves back together off the boat then installed the drive. After moving the shifter back to neutral I can still pull the drive off. It looks as if my shift cable is not moving the shift arm while the drive is mounted. If I pull the drive off the shift arm moves as it’s supposed to. Does this sound like cable has broken through the sheath or is there a way of messing up the shift rod adjustment when I was doing the water pump?

**** cable moves as it should with drive of, good'

With drive off can you rotate the shift foot CCW and does the prop lock in reverse rotation? And is the shift foot facing forward?

I’m thinking the lever came off the end of the shift cable when remounting the drive . This is in the bellhousing area , usually use grease to hold them together but they make a plastic tool to hold it. It’s like a $8 part… pull the drive back off and I think that’s what you will see.
unlike a gen one where the shift shoe is in the upper and can get miss indexed with the splined shaft in lower the gen 2 is all one pice

The gray shift lever is still attached to the cable and the set screw with the wire is still holding. I did notice that it is possible for this cradle to rotate while installing the drive. I use a hoist to install my drive so I don’t have to hold the weight while checking to make sure all things are straight.
I didn’t know my Saturday was grandkid watching day so I will not be able to get back to it until Monday

With shoe straight forward the prop should lock CCW not CW looking at the prop. Need to split the drive enough to reset the shoe

I’m talking about the lever with the wheel in it that swivels in the bellhousing this can get dislodged from the gray ‘end’ to the shift cable you reference. It will still move the shift lever some just not index correctly. Part number 20 in link https://www.marineengine.com/parts/...ne-genii-1998-and-up/0l100040-up/bell-housing

because the shift shaft in The lower ( stainless L shaped lever) is one piece unless you took it out of the lower i dont think that can get goofed up. I actually think the splines on it are such that it only goes in the lower one way. Part 32 in this link https://www.marineengine.com/parts/...-up/gear-housing-driveshaft-standard-rotation

So you thinking the set screw that holds this lever is loose and thus not moving the shift cradle. But my lower unit still only locks in forward gear CW not CCW.
My shift shoe on the the shift rod is pointing forward but the prop only locks CW. When spinning the prop CCW all it does is clicks.

when in a straight line the prop locks CCW this is forward gear when turned fully CCW the prop now locks CW and this is reverse, Cant make a mistake on the GEN II unless you had previously removed the shift rod from the lower unit
This is a Alpha but the GEN II is the same

Mine is working exactly opposite of this diagram. How could that be if I didnt remove the shift rod. Is there a way of the shift rod becoming misaligned if you didnt remove the shift rod. My shift rod has two bolts holding the seal down.

no, just that the roller on the end can become disengaged from the shift cable end when putting the drive on.

did you remove the stainless shift shaft from the lower? See BT drs comments above

Doesnt make sense if you didn’t remove …

the ccw is from behind the prop. When in fwd the prop when turned ccw will lock will ratchet clockwise. When in fwd turn the input shaft in upper clockwise, propshaft will turn clockwise

Is there a good video link showing the rotation of the prop shaft and which way the lock up should be.
I watched this video and when i turn my prop like he did thats where mine starts clicking. Whats aggrevating is this isnt the first time I have had the lower unit off. I have removed the engine from this boat before and reinstalled the drive with no problems, which is why its pissing me off.

Thanks for all the info you have provided so far.
Orientation wise when talking CCW and CW which way is which. Is CCW looking from rounded nose of the gear case towards the prop or from prop looking towards the rounded nose of the gear case?
This achris video may have been shot with the phone in reverse view

Also your previous post was talking about the shift arm….. that maybe the roller on the bottom of the arm jumped out of the fingers of the slide bar?
