Shift/Throttle Control Interchangeability

I am in the process of replacing an old Evinrude 25HP tiller steered with a 92 Force 40HP remote steered. In working with it, I have discovered that the shift/throttle control for the Force is shot. Are single lever controls interchangeable between the brands? If not, are there universal controls out there that would replace what I have now? If not, what do I do to get past this problem? Thanks.

Some are. You would have check to see if it has more then one set of cable holes. All major mfg. have different amount of throw for the shift. You could be short or long and neither is good.

I see. At this point, from what I've seen the cable ends, the connectors "seem" similar from one brand to the next. Guess I'll find out. Thanks for your reply.

Not all controls are interchangeable. In fact, most are not. Force engines in the 1990s may have come with US marine controls using Teleflex standard threaded end cables OR they may have come with Mercury controls. They are not swappable. So first, you need to determine if the engine has standard or Mercury controls. Then look for used units on ebay or craigs.
