Shift shaft seals

1975 85hp. Mercury shift shaft
Will someone please help with how to put the seals in the bushing, my 72 year old eyes don`t work
very well, I can`t be sure of the seal lip even with a magnifing glass.
That is why I asked if the springs go up or down. THANKS CHUCK

Hi Chuck
Yep they are small, they almost make me cross-eyed at times. The lips face up to stop water getting in.
The washer rubber sits above that seal
