shift shaft disconnect

hello, i have a merc 500 50hp (1968') and the shift shaft is different on this model . in order to drop lower unit and replace impeller how does the shift shaft disconnect ? i only see a way of removing lower unit by disconnecting shift shaft up top under carbs or else it's gonna pull directly out of gear case and ruin all the seals no ?. none of the mercury manuals discuss this model when doing the impeller they show only the ones where shift shaft splines join shift shaft at reverse lock cam. thanks

if there is no side cover on the leg then disconect at the top . your on the right track
