After replacing my water pump impeller I am having a hard time reconnecting the shift shaft connection. I can reconnect the shaft using the two locking nuts, but the shifter will not work properly. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I think you may have to disconnect it and then make sure the shift handle is in nuetral and then shift by hand on the rod to get the gear into neutral and then hook it back up. It should have been in reverse when you took it apart, that makes it easier to get to the nuts to do the sepration. Mine were cross threaded by the factory, along with one of the bolts holding the lower unit on. That was the fun partgetting that out after it broke off.
I did mine last year, never had any trouble with shifting after hooking it back up, but I could not get the shaft apart w/the lock nuts, had to take it loose on the top under the cowling, difficult but made it.
