shift shaft alignment problem

I have a Honda 2007 Bf150 Outboard with a shift shaft alignment problem. When changing the water pump?. during reattaching of the lower unit, the shift shaft got pushed up too far because of improper alignment. We pulled the shaft back down because it was slightly jammed up in there?. but now it has too much play and improper alignment with the lower unit..Now,.when attached,? the lower unit goes into forward and neutral but not reverse. ? even though the spines line up on the bottom? The shift shaft going into the power head needs to be adjusted because it is just a little out of alignment with the lower unit at the bottom.
Is there any procedure to adjust the shift shaft to the power head so it lines up with the lower unit WITHOUT having to remove the power head???

Any advice or resource would be deeply appreciated

Re: shift shaft alignment problem

The shift shaft "alignment" issue is actually more likey to be a bent shift rod, if you say you pushed it up to far then it could have been bent slightly - you might not even notice it with the naked eye - the biggest symptom to this is that it will shift into FWD & RVS and be hard to shift back into neutral - or - shift from one of the gears to N and not shift into the other.
Theres really not a whole lot else you could have broken doing water pump maintinace. The shaft is splined so that it really goes on only one way and its near impossible to bend the shift shaft (the top portion attached to the egine) but VERY easy to bend the shift rod the thinner of the two rods that go through the mid section.

they arent that expensive so hopefully thats your issue.

theres a small possibility your problem could be some other shift componants but not very likely based on what you posted. Good luck if you havent already fixed it :D

I believe the real problem is the shift lever in the gearcase

Re: shift shaft alignment problem

how would he have damage a lever INSIDE the gear case by doing a simple water pump maintenance.. short of him dropping it lol
THAT could ruin anyones day! :p

second... maybe i am missing something due to working on 225's but there gear case's are pretty similar..what shift lever?? the clutch dog or the actual splined shift rod that comes out of the top front of the g/c that the long shift rod (a) attaches to.

I wonder if he had this problem BEFORE water pump maintenance because i have done hundreds of those and really ive only ever managed to break ONE thing - and thats the shift rod (a) thru the midsection. :)
