I have an 86' 6 HP Merc short shaft that I need to get the correct shift rod height specs. I have taken it on and off twice already and it won't work. I don't want to spend $40 on a manual for one piece of info. Someone out ther must know how to adjust one of these things. Pleeeese!!!

Hi SaltyDog,
There should be a library with your manual in it somewhere. In Western Australia the Libraries have a web site where you can search for your book and find out which library it is available for loan at.

I cost my time at about $8 an hour and my manual has paid for itself several times over.
Cheers :D

I looked in my book, does not show a shift shaft adjustment, are you looking at a reverse lock that holds motor down in reverse? Got a photo?

Hello Salty Dog
Place gear housing in neutral. Measure distance that shift shaft extends from the water pump base. It should be 16 1\2" for short shaft. If lenth is incorrect, rotate shift shaft counterclockwise to lenthen, clockwise to shorten. Good luck.

Thanks, something must be wrong because I can't get it to 16 1/2 in neutral.
