After searching the archives, I could not find anything about this topic.

I have a 2002 BF225 XCA with serial #1000118, which is the early run for that year.

My shift rod seal seems to be the culprit regarding water getting into my lower unit, not a lot, just enough to milk some of the oil for the last few years and now getting worse to the point that I pulled the lower unit and saw oil coming up out of the shift rod seal.

My early model has a single seal. Later that year, they made a shift rod cover with a double seal, which I would like to move up to. The later cover goes further into the case than the earlier one to accommodate the seal, so they used a different rod with the components cut lower for this seal holder.

If I remove the spring on the shaft, the updated seal holder will fit. I believe there is room for a smaller spring, or even a bellville washer to provide some spring action. Otherwise, I have to replace the shift rod with the updated one to go back with the original spring.

I realize it sounds risky to re-engineer in such a way. It is just that when the shift shaft is turned through its range of motion, there is no up and down movement, such that the shaft just has to be held down so that its lower pin stays in place.

The boats.net page with the breakdown is here:

Any ideas appreciated, any experience with this respected.

Thanks.
