shift rod question

i have a 110 hp 1989 evinrude i did the water pump the other day and the shift rod turned on removal so i turned it back to where i thought it was. so i put it back together it goes into forward reverse and neutral no problem. my question is if the shaft were to short would it allow the engine to slip into neutral under full throttle ?

If the shaft were too short you would notice an issue while shifting. When these rods are screwed in improperly, basically it just makes it nearly impossible to shift properly, regardless of shift linkage adjustment.
