Well guys I need your help again. I think I really screwed up this time. I went to put a new shift shaft seal in and I went to pull the other one off it was hard to come off, so I pulled on it hard and pulled the shift shaft out. Can I fix it or have I screwed it up? Any help would be great. Thanks Dale

I think you're going to be okay but it'll take some patience.
I pulled a shaft out of a 2006 50ELPTEFI and had to go in three times after I reassembled twice because the shift cam follower had to be installed upside down to match gearshift. Before putting the new seals in try the shift shaft to be sure you've got the cam and follower right. Once you've got it go for the final assembly and put the seals in.
I was able to work with a fish wire and a flashlight to flip and orient the cam follower and align it to mate with the shift shaft. It did take some patience but I was successful.

To reinstall a shift shaft back into a 1973 inline 6 lower unit

Hello All,

All the response I have got is that I have to take the foot apart. The question is that I'm not a boat mechanic, but have work on race cars and been around cars all my life. Can I do this at my house and where could I find instructions how and what I need to remove to put the cam back onto the shift rod. Any help would be appreciated. Or does anyone know another way to get the rod reinstalled without taken it apart? Thanks guys

How to reinstall shift cam into the lower foot of a 1973 Mercury 1150

Hello All, I did get the foot apart. I'm turning out to be a boat mechanic. lol. Now I need some tips on how you reinstall the shaft cam and the best way to put the prop shaft and the rear carrier back together. I'm going to order all new orings before I assemble it.

Thanks Dale18

A "match extender" and some grease will allow you to install/hold cam in position..
