I am still trying to install My lower unit I had rebuilt after a wreck. When I try to set the length of the shift rod to the 21-15/16" it bottoms out at around 22.5". I even had it checked at the local shop. the only thing we could figure out is that it might be a V6 shift rod but he didn't have the rod for my lower unit in stock to compare. I was wandering if anyone could tell me the difference in the actual length of the shift rod for the V4 and the V6? I don't want to spend the $50 for the rod if that's not the problem.

Thanks,
Paul

yes, yes, and yes. We even checked it with the special OMC tool at the shop.

I think the key to your mistery lies with the guy who rebuilt it. Find out what he replaced for parts, and what they were off of. The length you have doesn't corrospond with any normal length in the manual, so you must have a mismatch of rod and gear assmy. Do you have the old parts?
>If the shape of the linkage is OK, I'd run a few more threads up the link and cut the excess off. I'd do this long before paying $50 (but I'm cheap)

:)

Whats parts were replaced? Shift rod for V6 not the same,do not have difference in length. In the OMC service manual there is 3 different specs for a V4 looper 20 inch motor set at 21 15/16 , a 22 1/2 motor set at 24 7/16, a 25 inch motor set at 26 15/16. If your are using the olds parts, screw the rod all the way in, then screw out counting the turns, screw back in using half of the counted turns, when you use this method you must insure none of the linkages contact the block or cowling when shifted into farward gear. After gearcase installed all linkages connected , adjust cable by placing throttle control between 3/4 and full throttle, shift gearcase into farward, pull slack out of cable, adjust cable trunion until cable end will connect to shift linkage.

Re: Shift rod length 1990 johnson 140hp

The problem is I sent it to one shop (a welding and prop repair shop) and then they sent it to the other shop to rebuild the lower unit. When they were trying to assemble it they found that something in the housing had been warped in the wreck. The shop kept it for quit a while and finally found an housing from a blown motor. I'm thinking that somewhere along the line the rod got switched with a V6 rod or something. The total length of the rod I have id 31.75" inches from end to end. I can't find any specs that show the length of the shift rod for the different engines. The shop that repaired it is looking thru all his stuff to see if he can find one that's shorter.

Thanks
Paul

Rebuilder problem, gear case wrong, wrong shift rod,or gearcase assembled wrong. Some ot the 140 loopers had a v/6 gearcase when new. I would take it back to the rebuilder, and let them solve the problem, or return money. On one of the other boards there is poster that ownes a rebuild shop,he may know length of shift rod. Poster name Blackbird.

Re: Shift rod length 1990 johnson 140hp

Thanks to all for the help. I think the 30 7/8" rod is probably the one I need. I screwed mine in 10 turns and it was about .75" long and that about the difference in the two rod measurements. I had already talked to the rebuilder and he's looking for the shorter rod. The shops about 150 miles away and he is hard to catch sometimes.

Thanks again,
Paul
