I have a 1981 Evinrude 140hp V4 model number E140TRLCIM. The question I have is about shift rod adjustment. I would like to know what the correct height of the shift rod is? If someone could help me by telling me how many turns out from bottom is recommended? I know it is very crucial to have this adjusted right so I am weary of putting the lower unit back on. I have researched on the internet and can't find an actual number or information for my specific model. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Kyle

Re: Shift Rod Adjustment

I have a 1990 VE150TXESB and found my shift rod height in a mechanics guide that I picked up.

I just replaced the water pump and I thought that I had it right and put everything back together. Once it was all tightened up, I tried to manually shift it and could only get good engagement in one direction. From there, I figured out that I was still too low. I dropped the lower unit again and turned it out 2 more turns. When it went back together, it shifted tightly in both directions. A tip is to snug it tight with only a bolt on each side rather than putting them all in.

You might get it close but you still may need to pull it a time or two more to get it right. I ended up doing it alone. Hope you can get some help as it is much easier.
