Shift problems 35 HP Merc 80's model

I pulled the LU and replaced the water pump impeller. Thanks to several of you I managed to get the LU back on but now I have no prop in forward or reverse. I know I will have to drop the LU again but have no idea what I did wrong.

Looking at your previous posts, I see that I failed to post the information concerning your s/n and i apologize.

Your s/n comes up as a model:

1035716 MERCURY 1986 35

Can you explain your prop situation a little better? Without touching the boat controls, reach down and with finger pressure only, which way does the prop rotate, CW, CCW or both? Now look and see what gear the boat control is in and let us know.
