Helping a friend out with his boat and wanted to see if you guys can give me some things to check. Tracker boat with Merc (I think 4.3L) I'm not sure, I know its a 2000 with a v-6 and Alpha 1 Gen II. The problem is the shift lever is just really hard to move. It goes in gear fine once you get the lever moved. I briefly looked at the cable mechanism on the engine and there is no rust or corrosion there, everything looks clean. Is there a way to lube the cable or the guts of the shift lever mechanism. I wish I had a picture of the shift mechanism for you. It does not have a neutral lever like mine does, you don't have to push anything to get it out of neutral, you just move the main lever forward. I went to download the manual from a boatfix link Don left on another thread, but all I got was the 14 pages of the table of contents, couldn't get to the rest of the manual. Thanks for the help.

I figured out the manual link so I'm looking at that. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Re: Shift problem on Alpha1 gen II

Disconnect the cable where it connects at the stern / engine area and see how it shifts then. It should move smoothly. If it doesn't the chances are good that the cable is binding. If it is, no amount of lubrication will help, it will need to be replaced.

You might also check to make sure there are no sharp bends in the cable.

Try disconnecting the cable from the shifter as well to see if the shifter itself is tight. If that is the problem, there MIGHT be a way to lubricate /adjust the tension on the shifter itself.

But by disconnecting the various areas one at a time you can see where the actual problem is.

That makes sense, I'll give it a shot. Thanks Fisher!
