Shift position problem

I recently installed a motor on my boat and hooked up all the controls. I went and launched it and when i went to put in reverse it went forward and the same the other way. When i push the shifter forward it goes in reverse. So I was thinking of just shifting the motor into forward and then disconnecting the cable and moving the shifter forward and then hooking the cables back up. I don't know if its that simple though. Any help is much appreciated.

Does this engine and controls mount as the original did?

Mercury controls are not compatable with Johnson motors. If the control is universal, it might be reconfigurable.
