Shift linkage

While replacing the impeller, I noticed the threads on the bolt in the shift linkage was pretty well stripped. :( The block was somewhat damaged but still has threads. Although the bolt held fairly well when taking it out, it fails to grab sufficiently going back in.
What's the easiest fix? I figure a regular steel bolt should NOT be used as the bolt stripped and not the bronze block. i.e. net a bolt of sacrificial material. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Shift linkage

Best, Safest and Easiest is a new connector - part # 303794 for the 15HP at your dealer. Safest cheap fix is a stainless bolt with self locking nut.

It would help if we knew what engine you are working on, Khenders.

Re: Shift linkage

When installing the bolt, first take a flashlight and peer in there and make sure the notch in the shift rod is aligned EXACTLY with the screw hole. If the screw drags on the edge of the notch it will wipe the threads off every time. That is what happened to yours the last time somebody put it together. They usually fall out five miles from shore.
