I just replaced the impeller in my 83 Merc 40. Now I have very little water out and won't go into reverse or neutral? Looks like maybe a water hose kinked on the front of the shaft. Possible I messed something up when I put it back together?

marcus32:

First: Was the control box in forward gear before you dropped the lower unit?

Second: While you have the lower unit off take the pump housing off and make sure that the veins of the impeller are bent the right way and that all of the seals and gaskets are inplace and not kinked or binding.

Third: If you can, put the lower unit in a buckeet and (With someone's help) turn the shaft and see if you are getting any water.

Fourth: If you get water from the bucket test then take a flexable electrical wire and stuff it up the "Taletell Hole" as far as you can and then pull it out. Spiders love to make webs in there as well as bugs go there to die.

Fith: MAke sure that the lower unit AND the control is in gear when you re-install the lower unit.

Let us know how you make out.

Craig

Re: shift linkage problem

Gear box was in forward mechanic told me easier to replace that way. But ended up putting it in reverse to match up splines when I put it back together? The small hose that comes down the shaft and connects with a plastic fitting appears to be kinked about half way up shaft?

The foot and gearbox have to be in the same gear for it to work. The little hose is just a speedometer hose, it has nothing to do with the waterpump. When you put the foot back on make sure the water pickup tube on the waterpump housing connects to the brass water tube coming from the powerhead.

the "speedometer tube" came apart. So now what can it just hang in the middle of the shaft (for lack of a better term).

You can do anything you want with it as long as it doesnt get in the way of anything. Most people just cut it very short if it isnt used.
