I have two almost identical 1980 Johnson 9.9's. One is a short shaft, the other is a Sailmaster (longshaft).
Dropped lower unit on both to inspect water pumps.
Now having problems with reattaching the lower units to the powerhead.
Problem is the shift linkage. When I removed the lower unit, I placed the shift arm in "Forward" to expose the linkage screw. What is the secret for proper shift operation when reinstalling? The screw is only accessible when the gearcase is in "Reverse". The upper shift linkage is only long enough when shift arm is in "Forward".

That's the easy way to get them together Ron.

Welcome aboard!

You need to put the shift lever in forward and the gearcase in reverse so you can put the shift rod link together and get the link screw in. Once that is done, push the halves together. May have to turn the prop shaft to get the lobes to engage in forward. But it will go together. Oh...you may have to turn the flywheel a little little to get the drive shaft splines and crank to mesh.

thats the correct way to have it
make sure screw threads into brass coupler easily if it is binding the shaft may not be centered correctly
