Shift Lever Loose in the Shifter Box

Hi guys. Just sold my OMC Stringer setup and picked up a 1985 Four Winns with a Mercruiser 3.0 Alpha 1 outdrive. One thing I noticed is that the shift lever is loose and wobbly in the throttle box. It works fine and shifts into both forward and reverse (trim up doesn't work, which is another issue), but I fear it will break off or become totally disengaged at some point. Is there a way to tighten things up in there? Can I get a few tips on how to access nuts or screws? Thanks!

Do you mean the remote control by the drivers seat? If so, there are different ones. Mine has a small set screw on the bottom of the control lever. Put yhe lever into forward full throttle and look at the bottom. Mine has an allen head.

Re: Shift Lever Loose in the Shifter Box

I'm not sure I see the allen head at the bottom. I have a Quicksilver control box with trim tab and a trailer button halfway down the shifter. There is a throttle only button at the joint where it connects to the box. There are two holes to the left that have allen screws deep-set in there. Do you know what these will do? Should I take the screws off of the shifter and start pulling things out to see where the problem lies??

Push in your thottle only button and push all the way foward.....then look at the bottom of the control and you will see the set screw.

It's way up in there...the only way to reach it is with an allen wrench!

there might be a little plastic cover over the allen screw opening. flip it off with a sharp edge.
