shift issues

Pulled drive off 82 228(305) mercruser. to aline engine and replace impeller, and cant seem to get the shift cables adjusted to have reverse. I can manually shift drive to lock prop in reverse. And pull lower cable to lock in reverse. but I have to pull hard and if I let off tention it slips out. cable seems free and we have been over the linkage several times what exactly should I be looking for? its like I need a little more travel on the fork in the outdrive. even tried going a tooth off on the shift shaft in the lower. shifted to reverse fine but no forward...

Try trimming a 1/4 inch of the plastic guide tube, or remove the slide ,setscrew,remove the inner core and clean slide with a drill bit. sometimes crud get built up inside and prevents full travel for reverse.Otherwise replace the shift cable.Outside chance the shift spool is worn in the lower unit.

"plastic guide tube" ? the sheathing on cable? And it seems the Crud would limit forward (cable in at shift plate) rather than reverse or am I thinking the wrong part?

the plastic tube the shift slide goes over, crud can pack in the slide preventing full travel

Thanks! that makes more sence now, I am a mechanic by trade but dont have much boat experiance.

For reverse the cable does move forward (pulls the upper shift shaft arm, and turns shaft CCW).
