Hey peeps, & thanx for what you do here ! Question is, I have a 1993 Dynasty with a 4.3 Yamaha YEMS drive, put it in the water saturday and it would not go anywhere. It idled great and went in reverse good but when i tried to go forward it would backfire through carb and cut off. I unhooked the shift interuption switch and started going fine no problems but it didn`t want to come out of forward into neutral to good. had to keep working with it. no problem coming out of reverse though. Is this a shifter problem or what ? I would really like to know the purpose of that shift switch !! Thanx again !!!!!

Re: Shift Interuptor Switch purpose?

Short Version:
The way the gears are cut, they won`t easily come apart under a load. It`s why you can`t come out of gear now.the interupter momentarily stalls the motor to aid in the gears releasing

Then why would it kill the engine before i even get it going or when im trying to accelerate? I did have a little trouble with the shifter one time, the actual shifter control could this be where the problem lies ? It is the pull out type . you have to pull it out to rev up the engine in neutral .

What engine/drive combo do you have?

On my boat, it is on the port side of the engine, where the shift cables come to the top of the engine.

My only concern after reading Dons link: I adjusted my cables out of the water. The "timing" of the shift interrupter switch to when the drive starts to engage is perfect with the muffs on.. How is it going to react in the water? Makes me nervious. Guess i will take the tools tomorrow.

Time to start a new thread with your own questions. otherwise, they will be lost in the middle of an old thread.
