The last time I was on the lake and was shift into forward then the boad not moving and the engine run (RPM are go up) has to full back to neutral then forward again do that untill it go (maybe 5 to 10 time) But the Reverse are work fine. With your experience what will go wrong with it? Transom Shift Cable? Lower or Uper unit?

*** 1990 OMC Cobra Stern Drives ***

Last week I check it, start the engine shift to forward and I can here the sound like the gear in lower unit are not fully engage, check it with the engine off shift to forward it dose engage.
I want to Disassemble the stern drives to check it out, I do need help is there some think I should know before I disassembly it? or How to? Or you have the manual of the stern drives I can use?

The lower shift cable between the drive and the engine is the MOST COMMON cause of your problem. They get wore out or stiff and don't allow full movement.

Unless you have a factory manual and some very good mechanical skills you best let a shop handle it.
It could be the shift cable is needing replaced. By the sound of it the forward gear could be damaged by this point.
Drain the gear oil and look for metal shavings on the drain screw magnet.
Do Not keep running it untill you fix the problem. You could buy another boat for what it will cost you to replace that drive.
There is a whole lot more inside that drive than you think. It is a pretty complex unit.

Gary H NC. and Don S.
Thanks for the info, I'm very good with mechanic I think I can handle it If I do have correct manual, I will looking for the manual. I think it will be Shift cable or transom cable, my question is which cable would be?
I did drain gear oil to check and there is no metal shaving and the oil are clean.

Thanks

It'll be the Lower Shift Cable,.....

The 1 that runs from the Engine to the Drive.....

Re: Shift forward and the boat not moving

It will probably be a red cable(the updated version)
Runs from the engine bracket thru the transom.

look for searayman13 on ebay.he will have your manual.
If he don't have it listed or you can't find him let me know..

I have an extra OMC manual but its an 1987 edition. It would probably be a big help if you can't find one..
The drives didn't change anything major over a few years..

Here is the manual you need, a little pricey but well worth it in my opinion. Should confirm first that you do have a 1990 model, the model number on the engine plate should end with a PWS, PWC.

Yep,thats the same guy i bought mine from Bob.
You can give him the serial number off the drive and he will send the right manual.Actually thats a good price for it being like new condition..
its very possible that if the boat is a 1990 model the drive is a 1989...

Good deal! Thats what you need. You won't regret paying a little more for the real service manual.
Believe me,it pays for itself after a few uses..
Send Searayman the serial number off your drive to make sure...8)

Good luck, Let us know how it turns out.8)

That manual shows how to properly adjust the shift cable before you bolt the drive back on..Look up neutral shift cable adjustment.Section 11 in my book...
