I have the lower unit off and i can move the shifter by hand but I can not get it out of reverse Is there a trick to getting the gears to work correctly Should the unit shift manually or must the unit be installed to work properly

Re: shift controlls

Hi snake
Please try and keep to one post on the subject. This allows everybody to follow along. You will get better help and info. Your l\u dosen't have to be attached in order to shift. You may need to turn the prop shaft while trying to shift. My guess is your trying to turn the shift shaft the wrong way. If your l\u is stuck it should be stuck in forward.

Re: shift controlls

As I peer into my non working crystal ball I look but I can't tell what kind of motor you have??? So, here is something to start on. When I removed my lower unit on my 85 hp Johnson I was able to move the shift rod up and down. The driveshaft only turned in one direction but as I moved the shift rod I was able to determine FNR. I turned the gears by hand using the prop. Are you saying that it is stuck? Have you tried moving the prop then shifting?

You really need to be a touch more specific on what type of motor or what type of I/O outdrive. People here on this board have probably dealt with the same situation. Hope it helps.

Bob
