During my orientation ride, the dealer indicated that I should should shift the motor into gear rapidly rather than ease it into gear. I understand this will keep the gears from grinding but wondering if the immediate torque can be just as or more damaging to the lower unit.

The second part of my question is if I am going forward and need to go into reverse should I shift into neutral to stall the prop before shifting into reverse or is there anything wrong with immediately going into reverse?

Helpful thoughs appreciated.

Kevin

Re: Shift Control Engagement

Dealer is dead on with the quick shifting. If not, you will wear out the clutch dogs in the lower unit and the gears, also. You don't have to slam it in gear, just shift firmly. You are dead on with going to neutral and letting the motor wind down before going into reverse. But if an emergency, head to reverse right away. This would be if you were about to hit something that may cause damage to others or property. And if you are at high speed, you will more than likely damage the lower unit. But better that then the alternative..

Re: Shift Control Engagement

There really is'nt a lot of immediate torque.
Remember, your prop is in water, which will allow plent of slipage.

Cheers... Canuck 16
