shift cable???

I have a 1990 Mercruiser 4.3 LX with a yamaha outdrive. dont know much more about outdrive. engine was shutting down when I tried to put in fwd or rev. I got a new upper shift cable, but when I put the shifter console back together its like the cable is not letting it even shift into gear. they are the same length. what else do I need to check? lower shift cable? Shift interupter switch? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Ayuh,... My guess is you need a Merc outdrive to match the Merc motor...

Yamaha drives are an Unknown commodity in North America....
They were imported a for a year or 2,+ now there's No parts, nor Talent to fix 'em...
