I have a 97 chaparral with a 4.3 LX gen + mercruiser. My mechanic is changing the bellows ( shift, exhaust and drive ) and called to tell me he recommends changing the shift cable as it looked like it has never been changed.
Is this normal. He said he wasn't trying to sell me the farm and it was only about $40 for the part and 1/2 hr labor.

Re: Shift Cable

I just had both of mine done to the tune of $400!! I would say he is taking care of you!! Yes, highly recommended as these are wear items and need replacing every few years.
