Shift Cable Spiral Wrap

I have an Alpha 1 that I am replacing the shift cable on. The kit came with a piece of spiral wrap. Does anyone know where this goes?

It's designed to go down where the cable comes out from the transom... but I never use it. Just one more thing to get caught and in the way when you replace it next.

If I am not mistaken ,the spiral wrap is suposed to protect the outer cable sheath or housing melting from an exhaust overheat.
