shift cable shortened

Does anybody know if a shift cable can be shortened. This is for a mercruiser. the one running from the control box.

cootie, you should be so lucky! Most folks want to know how to stretch a cable. Seriously, you can't cut these things down, but you can make a large sweeping "S" turn to take up the slack. Good Luck
