Where the shift cable matches up to the back side of the bell housing, is there any sort of seal there? Seems like there should be....or just goop it up with that perfect seal and call it a day?

I guess I was thinking it if leaks around that, it going through where the shift cable goes into the foot? And getting up in the cable? I will goop it up anyway just in case....

Per Bondo , it's a brass pipe fitting with tapered pipe threads. It seals water from getting from the wet side (front) of the bell hsg. into the dry side behind. Near zero water pressure as far as a pipe thread cares. I changed mine past spring and wrapped Teflon tape around the fitting, and am sleeping well.

Ayuh,..... Not tapered Dave,..... Straight pipe threads, a very special tap,..... yet another Special Tool,....

Pipe thread, none the less,...... ;)

OK, so wondering if we are on the same page....where the lower shift cable goes through the bell housing, there is a thru hole where the threaded end of the cable goes through with a nut on the other side...does not sound like we are talking about he same thing here?

Not sure about a nut. The fitting has a 9/16" hex and will tighten to seal and hold on it's own. If someone added nut to the inside itsi a bad sign the hsg threads may be striped. If so go back to your goop plan and pull the drive each year to check for water.

here is a bravo shift cable kit- it has what looks like a cable, a nut and seal that goes on from the housing side. On the inside, there is a slot that the hex shape of the cable rests in so you can tighten the nut. lower shift cable pic.jpg

Not knowing what drive this is makes it hard to answer, A Bravo uses to washers on each side with a nut. A alpha does not use a nut, it is part of the cable itself and is not removable

sorry, bravo III, 2006. There would be no spot for a nut on the inside of the cable...in the lower center above is a nut and what appears to be a seal. Mine must have been gone when I took it apart as I don't have one or recall it. I'm starting to figure this has been apart by someone who actually knows less about this that I do....the lower steering pin was upside down with the carter pin at the top, not really secured to anything....could have popped out of there..

Yep, item 12 shows it also...the cable above is way different parts than mine...mine is like the one I posted the picture of.

I'm good, I will make a rubber washer/seal and put some perfect seal on it for good measure and call it a day...

sorry guys but thanks for the help anyway...just talking through it got me my answer. The admiral is not much to bounce questions or theories against! Lord I hope to have this boat back in the water soon...I still need to by exhaust elbows- my boat is fresh water and the riser looks to be fine...must be something about where the water and exhaust mix and exit to the y pipe that really reacts with the metal...I'm sure they must be original....have not hit her with the cost of those yet.
