Shift cable replacement

[1970 Chieftain V]

I am replacing the shift cable on my Alpha 1. The manual says no more than 2 threads on the retainer nut should be exposed. Is that 2 threads on the forward side (bellows side) sticking out or 2 threads between the retainer nut and the bell housing?

Between the retainer nut and the bellhousing.

Thank you Don. That part of the instrustions is a little confusing.
