Shift Cable..need your assistance!!!

Okay so I'm getting two differen't "what's wrong" with my boat theories.

One is that the shift cable needs to be replaced. I took off the lower shift cable and it moves freely back and forth with a little bit of effort. It doesn't move smooth, but I don't have to force it either. (So I don't think it's a bad shift cable)

The second theory is that the shift cable needs to be adjusted, So i have a manuel and decided to try and adjust it, but with no luck. I looked online and found like 4 different methods of adjusting it, each more confusing than the other.

I would appreciate any help at all, or maybe a link (that someone knows to be correct) that could send me.

boats an 89' mercruiser, Alpha one, right hand turn

Thanks!

replace the lower shift cable if any resistance is felt.will cause a binding action when moved and trip the interupter.

Re: Shift Cable..need your assistance!!!

Thanks!! I have a weekend project now to do!! Does anyone have any reliable articles on replacing the shift cable, as well as an adjustment info when it's finally installed. I just don't want to do research on an unreliable article. I really like working on my toys, but am kind unfamliar with the outdrives. BUT WOULD LOVE TO LEARN!!!

Thanks again!!!:)

In your first post you said you have a manual if it is the one for you drive unit that's where I would start my research. If it's not the one for your drive unit post your ser # and someone here can help you identify the part # for the serv manual for your particular unit.

Re: Shift Cable..need your assistance!!!

To be seriously honest I just spent the last week redoing my bellows and gimba bearings on my 90 seray with twin merc 350's. If you don;t already have the tools to disassemble and then reassemble the gimbal housing plus the special deep thin walled socket to remove the nut on the lower shift cable in the gimbal housing. My recommendation is save yourself a headache, and take it to a local shop to have done. It will probably cost you just as much if you don't already have the right tools plus ,countless trips to the local hardware shop for stainless steel bolts or nuts you striped, lots of laundry for greasy clothes, and asprin for scraped knuckles and headaches

I agree with you on that part. But I'd really like to learn, I'm kinda tired of getting taken for a ride at the boat shop. Plus it's nearly a month till they can schedule me in!!!
