Shift Cable Jacket Looks Rusty

My shift cable wouldn't shift, so I pulled off the outdrive. The shift cable's black outer sleeve is broken open in a 1" section of the cable between the transom and the "wall" that the outdrive attaches to. I can see rust inside.

Is this rust just on the metal sleeve that the inner cable slides in? Or is the rust likely a leak spot? I lubricated it and worked it around, so the shift cable now moves fine, but I am wondering if I have to replace it. That sounds like a big job.

You need a new cable.

I agree you need a new cable... But it is not that big a job. If you enjoy working on things, now is a good time to learn how to replace your cable! You'll learn a few other important things along the way as well.
