I have replaced the shift cable and can't find the right procedure to adjust it. I have seen three different ways from different sites. Can someone that knows the right way Help me out. I do have the tools. It is a 1996 with a 7.4L.

If you have a new cable you should be able to just install and go. The new cables have the barrel nut peened into the correct position. Have you installed and are having troubles, or just asking before your try?

I have installed the cable.
The cable I got was not pre set. It came with the kit for replacing the gimbal bearing and the bellows.
Thank you for responding.

If the barrel nut the slides on the shift plate spins easy then your will need a adjustment tool (91-127427) to make it a bit easier. The great thing about the Bravo drive is it shifts real easy on muffs so you can adjust a bit back n forth until you get it right. Can find the tool by searching for it, doesn't cost much.

Here is the adjustment procedure

Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but I have the special tools and never use them.

1. with the drive off, adjust the brass barrel on the lower shift cable so that the shift cable end sticks out of the bell housing 7/8" to the bottom of the ball end and temporarily secure the cable on the shift plate on the engine.
2. install the drive
3. remove the cable from the shift plate on the engine.
4. ensure the drive is in neutral,
5. ensure the shifter/throttle is in neutral
6. adjust the brass barrel on the lower shift cable until the cable installs loosely onto the stud and barrel bosses on the shift plate.
7. Temporarily secure the cable in place (don't bend the cotter pin yet and don't snug the nylock nut down yet)
8. Test with engine running, if shifting is good, properly secure the cable on the shift plate.

You did not use the core wire locating tool as shown here in step 6 or in step 10?
Mine is a model year 2000 but the procedure appears to be the same.
Without setting that, I'm not sure if you'll have it set right.
It's also important, at least on mine, to disconnect the cable coming the throttle control at the throttle plate, set the cable going to the outdrive as listed in the instructions, then last adjust and hook the throttle cable back up.
